wireless broadband
Many people assume that broadband can only be delivered through telephone lines. While this is the most common form of broadband delivery (it's called DSL), it's not an effective solution for rural Ireland:
- It requires the local exchange to be "enabled" - and few rural exchanges have been.
- It doesn't work if you're more than a given distance from your local exchange.
Fine for towns; not so good out the country. - It needs a good quality phone line. If you're one of the many people with a phone line that can barely sustain a 14k dialup, you're probably out of luck.
Wireless broadband (sometimes known as FWA - fixed wireless access) works around these problems. With a small antenna mounted on your premises, you connect directly to the nearest "access point" and enjoy high-speed, always-on broadband.
